Forensic Interviews
Forensic interviews are conducted at the center by a specialist in a child-friendly, video monitored room. The interviewer is specially trained to talk and interact with children while assessing their capabilities and gathering legally sound facts regarding the abuse allegations. The information gathered during the forensic interview aids the criminal and child welfare investigation.
Medical Examinations
Medical examinations are conducted for children who have made an allegation of sexual abuse. The medical exam is important in determining if a child has been injured or needs medical treatment for sexually transmitted diseases. In addition, the information gathered in the exam process can be used in the criminal process.
Therapy Assessments
A Child Victim Therapist provides assessments, crisis counseling, individual, group and family therapy. Children who have been sexually abused often display symptoms such as anger, acting out, nightmares, bed wetting, withdrawl and isolation. These symptoms require treatment so the abused child can move beyond the trauma of abuse and begin healing.
Advocacy and Support
After a disclosure of sexual abuse by a child, the family is forced to deal with many stressful issues. An advocate at the Center is available to aid the family during this time. Some activities may inclue but are not limited to: answering questions, educating the family on how the legal system works, and providing crisis counseling to the family. The Center advocates also facilitate groups that educate and promote healing.
Family Support Group
This group provides a support system that aids the non-offending parent in coping with his or her child's sexual abuse. Topics addressed in this group include: Identifying different types of abuse, stress management, law enforcement procedures, information about the legal system, managing their child's behavior and safety planning.
Teen Girls Educational Group
This group is for teen girls who have been affected by sexual abuse. Topics of discussion include increasing self-esteem, relationships, safety issues, and stress management/relaxation techniques.
Kids In Court
This program helps educate victims and their families about courtroom personnel and procedures through role-play in an actual courtroom. Kids In Court stresses to the child that their role in court is to simply tell the truth.
Information and Referral
Advocates also assist families by providing information about helpful community resources. The advocates can coordinate transportation to and from the Center for appointments when needed.
